Saddam is dead!

Ding dong the witch is dead!

Or rather the brutal former dictator is dead!

We came down this morning, turned on the telly and flicked onto BBC News 24, to be confronted by news that Saddam Hussein had been executed at 6am Iraqi time. Strug up by the neck until he was dead.

C's first response was, 'Good' and in all honesty it's difficult to come to any other conclusion.

The oft-repeated sentiment on the telly is that we, the West, disown the death penalty and find Saddam's execution 'distasteful'.

Not sure I entirely agree with that supposed consensus. Leaving aside the opposition to his execution that many will instinctively portray simply because it may be seen as a victory for the US-led invasion of Iraq three years ago (It won't), a nasty, evil murderer has suffered the same fate he metered out and I can't find it within myself to oppose or find 'distasteful' the justice Saddam was handed.
